For Kent Thiry, being a positive force in the world isn't a means to an end, it is the end.

The DaVita CEO told students during a conversation with Dean Bill Boulding that he has always been regarded as a team-builder. But he used to see that ability simply as a path to a better business outcome.

"Somewhere along the line," he said, "I flipped, where profit became the means, business success became the means, and the end became having positive impact on the world."
