Biography

Joe LeBoeuf was born in 1951 and is the oldest in a family of seven children, and the son of career Marine. He enlisted in the Army in 1969 after graduation from high school and working in the construction industry in Florida. He was selected to attend the US Military Academy Preparatory School and earned an appointment to West Point, graduating with a commission as a second lieutenant, Combat Engineers, in 1974. While at West Point, COL(R) LeBoeuf was a pre-med major, captain of the nationally ranked, Division I men’s varsity volleyball team, and commanded the First Regiment, United States Corps of Cadets (USCC). 

Since graduation, Joe has attended a number of military and professional schools to include the Command and General Staff College and the US Army War College. He is a parachutist and Army Ranger. He has had numerous command and staff assignments in both the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Continental United States. He commanded the largest engineer company in the Army, served for 26-months as the senior aide to the VII Corps Commander in Europe, a combat engineer battalion executive officer (XO) and brigade engineer in the 4th Mechanized Infantry Division and selected for battalion command. He spent 3 years working for the Chief of Staff of the Army (CSA), GEN Eric Shinseki, on a special study of leadership and leader development issues in the Army, and served on the CSA’s Army Training and Leader Developmental Panel (ATLDP) Executive Committee for over 2 years. His academic education includes a BS in Engineering from West Point, a Master’s in Engineering Psychology and Ph.D. degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the Georgia Institute of Technology. 

Joe retired as a Colonel after 34 years in uniform in 2003, and his last assignment was as an Academy Professor at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He was the Deputy Head of the Behavioral Sciences and Leadership Department, Director of Organizational Studies and the Director of the Academy’s graduate degree granting experience [a partnership with Columbia University], the Eisenhower Program. In a past assignment at West Point (1985-88), he served as an assistant professor, and Director of the General Psychology course taken by all plebes. His expertise is focused on leadership education, leader development and organizational culture and change. He has been intimately involved in building the leadership and leader development programs at USMA and throughout the Army, helped author the Army’s leadership doctrine, and served as an advisor to the Army’s Chief of Staff in reshaping Army culture to better integrate training and leader development, and to facilitate Army Transformation. 

Joe, recently reappointed to a second term as a full Professor of the Practice of Management, was hired by the Fuqua School of Business in June, 04 to teach leadership and management in the MBA programs, work as a scholar in the Coach K Center of Leadership and Ethics (COLE), and serve as the senior mentor and faculty advisor to thirty-nine COLE Leadership Fellows. In the past seven years, he has taught Managerial Effectiveness, Facilitation, Coaching and Mentoring, Leading and Managing Human Assets and Organizational Change, and Leadership --- all electives. He has also taught an undergraduate leadership course in the Hart Leadership Program, Stanford School of Public Policy at Duke from 2006- 2010. Additionally, he runs Consequential Leadership 2 [C-LEAD 2], a 4-day leader development experience for 400+ second year MBA students each year. It is a core graduation requirement. Outside of his Fuqua responsibilities, he serves as a consultant with Duke Corporate Education, the #1 custom designers of leadership development programs in the country. He participated as the lead consultant with ANSER, Inc. on a 9-month study of the Air Force Academy’s leader and character development program for the Secretary of the Air Force, and completed assisting in a benchmarking study of the Reserve Officer Education Course (ROTC) with leadership education programs in business, industry and academia for the Commander, US Army Accessions Command. Currently, Joe is working a strategic project for Chief of Staff  2 of the Army, through the Center for the Army Professional Ethic [CAPE], to re-professionalize the Army, through his role as a lead educator, and integrator for a program to create educators and trainers, Armywide, in the Army profession, the professional ethic and culture, and the development of character. 

Professor LeBoeuf has been a contributing author on a number of books and other publications for the United States Military Academy and the US Army to include FM1, The Army, FM 22-100, Army Leadership, US Army’s Concept for Officership, and a chapter in the book, Future of the Army Profession (McGraw-Hill, 2003) . Most recently, he was co-author for the report Developing Leaders of Character at the U.S. Air Force Academy: From “First Contact” to Commissioning, Junior officer Leadership Development Research BOLC 1: ROTC, and two book chapters on leadership and leader development for the Harvard Business School Press and Sage Publications. His research and writings have also appeared in Military Review, The Teaching of Sociology, and the Journal of Consulting Psychology, and the Handbook of Teaching Leadership [Harvard]. 

He is married (30 years) to Brigadier General (R) Maureen LeBoeuf, an Army aviator, also a former member of the permanent faculty at West Point with a doctorate from the University of Georgia. She was the Head, Department of Physical Education (the “Master of the Sword”) at West Point for seven years prior to her retirement. They have two children, son Jay who is 28, a West Point graduate and Army Captain currently with the 4th Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Carson, CO,, and a veteran of 2 combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan; and daughter Jackie, 23, recently married to her high school sweetheart, Stephen Thorn, a Naval Academy graduate, commissioned as a 2nd LT, US Marine Corps, in June 2012. Jackie is an aspiring chef.
